Libertad / Goddess of Victory

Since 1982, the silver coin Libertad (Freedom) with the motif of the goddess of victory “Victoria” has been minted in the Mexican mint “Casa de Moneda de México”.

It is characterized by a fineness of 999/1000 silver, as is usual for common investment coins, and is therefore seen as the first investment silver coin.

Silver coin Libertad (1982 – 1995)

The Libertad is a coin and not a medal, although it does not have a face value.

The face value is based on the current silver price, which is determined daily on the stock exchange. The silver coin is available in Germany from many coin dealers and, in some cases, banks and savings banks. Among common silver bullion coins, it is the only silver coin without a face value.

A total of four coin series have been produced to date, some of which differ in their motif design and the respective minting processes. The first two coin series, minted between 1982 and 1991 and 1992 and 1995, are referred to in literature or colloquially by the Spanish term "onza" (ounce).

1 oz Libertad

The diameter of the 1 oz Libertad from 1982 to 1995 was exactly 36 mm; since 1996, the coin has been issued with a diameter of 40 mm. The depiction of the goddess of victory was also adjusted, both in terms of motif and perspective. Until 1995, the goddess of victory was depicted frontally; from 1996 onward, however, a larger image section was chosen, from an angled right, thus also depicting the pedestal on which the statue stands.
